Lace up and show up: I am excited to join the 2026 Vancouver Island Race Series as ambassador

From co-founding Notorious Run Club to capturing the pulse of the Island’s running scene, Travis Devonport supports the community on the move

It’s official – I’m beyond stoked to not only be running the Vancouver Island Race Series for 2026, but also joining the team as a series ambassador. Honestly, it feels like such a full-circle moment.

Originally from Nova Scotia, I started running marathons in 2024 with my friend Brett Pfliger. What began as a fun hobby quickly turned into a true passion – one that’s taken me across thousands of kilometres throughout British Columbia, including the 2025 Island Race Series.

Through all the highs and lows of training, the Island Race Series became something I really looked forward to. It kept me motivated, connected, and accountable heading into the Calgary Marathon, which I ran later that spring with Brett. There’s something so special about this series – it’s for runners, by runners. I couldn’t be prouder to share the road with such a supportive, welcoming community of athletes, runners and soon-to-be road warriors.

What’s new for 2026: familiar routes and fresh starts

This year’s series is shaping up to be one of the best yet! With exciting course updates and community events that will make race days even more memorable.

First off, the Harrier Pioneer 8K is heading back to its original location at the Saanich Fairgrounds. For anyone who ran the series before the North Saanich route five or six years ago, this is big news. There’s something special about returning to those roots – the energy, the crowds, and the atmosphere – it all just feels right. It’s the perfect way to kick off the season.

Next, the Cobble Hill 10K will now start and finish at George Bonner School, moving from the Nature School location. This change should help ease congestion while keeping the course fast and friendly. It’s one of those classic Island runs – rolling roads, a strong community turnout, and a finish line that always feels electric.

Over in Lantzville, runners can breathe a sigh of relief – last year’s proposed map with several 180-degree turns caused some concern, but for 2026, there are now just two 180s. A smoother, quicker layout means more time to focus on pacing, scenery, and soaking up that coastal energy. Whew!

And if you’re mapping out your race calendar, take note: the Comox Half, Bazan Bay 5K, and Cobble Hill 10K are all capped events again this season – 1,100 for Comox, 800 for Bazan Bay, and 900 for Cobble Hill. Each of these sold out last year, so if you’re planning to run, register early to guarantee your spot.

Finally, we’ve t have a special kickoff event on Friday, January 9th, before the Pioneer 8K on the 11th, at 6:00 PM. It’ll be hosted at Frontrunners Downtown Victoria, and it’s a key part of helping the series run smoothly. Picking up your season pass or Pioneer bib at the kickoff not only saves time on race weekend – it also helps ease the load for the Frontrunners Shelbourne team and keeps Sunday race day stress-free. Plus, it’s a great chance to connect with other runners, chat about training plans, and get hyped for another incredible season.

Running as a reflection of life

For me, running has always mirrored life. It’s not about being the best or the fastest – it’s about showing up. Showing up for yourself, for your friends, for your family, and for your community.

Every time you lace up, you’re chasing a goal that only you truly understand. Over time, you realize that the real reward isn’t the medal or the time on the clock – it’s the journey, the discipline, and the people you share it with.

That’s what the Island Race Series represents to me – a community that celebrates every stride, every personal best, and every reason we run.

Building community, one step at a time

In 2024, after the BMO Marathon, Brett and I sat down and decided to create the kind of running community we felt was missing in our lives. That conversation became Notorious Run Club in Victoria. Not long after, our great friends, Emiliano and Majo joined the team, and together we built a space where running, connection, and creativity collide.

What started as a few people showing up for casual runs has grown into something much more – a movement built on friendship, accountability, and shared growth. Seeing runners from all backgrounds come together, support one another, and chase their goals is honestly one of the most rewarding parts of my journey.

Looking ahead

As a 2026 Vancouver Island Race Series ambassador, I’m excited to bring that same community-first energy to every race. I can’t wait to combine my passion for videography and photography with running – capturing those unforgettable race-day moments, the grit, the smiles, and the post-finish line high that make this series so special.

Giving back to the running community fills my tank. It’s what keeps me lacing up, showing up, and celebrating the process. My heart is full – and I can’t wait to share the miles ahead with all of you.

If you’re ready to take on the Island this season, I’d love to see you at the start line. Let’s make memories, chase goals, and celebrate the journey together!
